Energy efficient wireless sensor network

In the field of sensor technology, resource efficiency, and with it the reduction of specific electronic components, cabling and energy storage, is becoming increasingly important. This is essential for cost reduction, risk minimization in international supply chains and the reduction of energy and raw material resources. Within the scope of the transfer pilot, investigations are being carried out regarding the addition of wireless communication and energy harvesting to existing sensor technology from Müller Elektronik, in order to eliminate the need for cabling in the future.

Problem

Sensor technology is already used in many industrial applications, such as process optimization, production and product development. The industry-specific sales show an annual, stable growth rate at a high level. In addition to the development of software-specific methods for processing sensor measurements on the sensor platforms as such, topics such as data security, resource efficiency and minimization of maintenance are a major component of future developments in the field of sensor technology. In particular, resource efficiency and the associated reduction of specific electronic components, cabling and energy storage are essential for cost reduction and risk minimization in international supply chains. Müller Elektronik GmbH is also facing these challenges for a more sustainable use of resources.

Objective and Approach

Within the scope of the transfer pilot, the following basic objectives are to be realized: 1. analysis and comparison of relevant wireless communication technologies 2. specification of the energy budget for a sensor node 3. construction of a prototypical sensor network to illustrate and evaluate wireless communication 4. development of a working method for the integration of energy harvesting modules into existing sensor hardware.
